Sexual Harassment at Comic-Con in the Spotlight

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Amid the costumes and fantasy of this weekend’s Comic-Con convention, a group of young women drew widespread attention to a very real issue — allegations of sexual harassment at the annual comic book convention.
Geeks for CONsent, founded by three women from Philadelphia, gathered nearly 2,600 signatures on an online petition supporting a formal anti-harassment policy at Comic-Con.
Conventioneers told Geeks for CONsent they’d been groped, followed and unwillingly photographed during the four-day festival.
Meanwhile, what Geeks for CONsent and others regarded as blatant objectification continued at this year’s convention. Scantily clad women were still used as decoration for some presentations, and costumed women were described as “vaguely slutty” by panel moderator Craig Ferguson. When Dwayne Johnson made a surprise appearance to promote “Hercules,” 10 women in belly-baring outfits stood silently in front of the stage for no apparent reason.
Groping, cat-calling and other forms of sexual harassment are a larger social issue, not just a Comic-Con problem. And many comics and movies still portray women as damsels in distress. But Geeks for CONsent says things are amplified at the pop-culture convention where fantasy and character costumes play such a large role.
"It’s a separate, more specific issue within the convention space," said Rochelle Keyhan, 29, director of Geeks for CONsent. "It’s very much connected (to the larger problem) and it’s the same phenomena, but manifesting a little more sexually vulgar in the comic space."
"Comic-Con has an explicit Code of Conduct that addresses harassing and offensive behavior," said Comic-Con International in a statement on Sunday to The Associated Press. "This Code of Conduct is made available online as well as on page two of the Events Guide that is given to each attendee."
Earlier, Comic-Con spokesman David Glanzer told the Los Angeles Times that “anyone being made to feel uncomfortable at our show is obviously a concern for us.” He said additional security was in place this year, including an increased presence by San Diego Police.
Keyhan’s focus on Comic-Con began with a movement launched in her hometown called HollabackPhilly, to help end public harassment against women and members of the LGBT community. She and her colleagues developed a comic book on the subject in hopes of engaging middle- and high-school students, which is what brought them to Comic-Con.
Costuming, or cosplay, is a big part of the popular convention, with male and female fans dressing as their favorite characters, regardless of gender. A man might wear a Wonder Woman outfit, and a woman could dress as Wolverine. Keyhan and her colleagues — all in costume — carried signs and passed out temporary tattoos during the convention that read, “Cosplay does not equal consent.”
In addition to Comic-Con’s Code of Conduct, Geeks for CONsent wants the 45-year-old convention to adopt a clearly stated policy and says staff members should to be trained to handle sexual harassment complaints.
"It makes it feel safer for the person being harassed to report it and also for bystanders who witness (inappropriate behavior)," Keyhan said.
Toni Darling, a 24-year-old model who was dressed as Wonder Woman on Saturday, said the issue goes way beyond Comic-Con.
"I don’t think it has anything to do with cosplay or anything to do with costumes," she said. "People who are the kind of people who are going to take a photo of you when you’re not looking from behind are going to do that regardless, whether you’re in costume or not."
Still, she’d like to see an advisory in the Comic-Con program against surreptitious photography, and a clearer statement from Geeks for CONsent. She found some fans were afraid to take photos, even when she was posing at a booth on the showroom floor.
"The kind of behavior that needs to be modified," she said, "is somebody taking a photo of you bent over while you’re signing a print."

US Labour Springs to Life as Incomes Fall

As America's largest federation of unions, the AFL-CIO, ended its quadrennial convention in Los Angeles, something different seemed to be in the air. It wasn't just the lingering forceful rhetoric from the stage about reversing America's growing inequality and declining standard of living, or the pledges towelcome non-union workers into the federation and labour movement.
Instead, it was the realization that Americans are not just struggling with labour issues -- wages, benefits, advancement, healthcare, retirement -- but are paying closer attention to what labour is now saying and doing. That could be seen in the wide interest that people outside the convention took in Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren's speech defending labour's agenda as America's agenda and attacking the Supreme Court as the most pro-corporate court ever.
It could be seen in the media's interest in the coast-to-coast protests organized by fast-food workers, helped by one of the largest non-AFL-CIO unions, Service Employees International Union. It could be seen in what the business press covered from L.A., the prospect of remaking unions to include members who are not represented by it in contract talks, such as student, environmental and women's groups. "I think it is important that people are getting interested in organized labour again," said University of Texas professorJack Getman, one of the country's top labour law experts. "The tone is good, but you have to put in the sweat. You have to inspire people. I think the fast-food workers strike is inspiring people to take another look at unions."
There's little that's new in the longstanding progressive rhetoric of union organizing, which emphasizes the importance of class, jobs that provide dignity and living wages, and how prosperity comes from a growing middle class. But what's new in 2013 is that as the country's working class is growing in the wake of the 2008 recession, more Americans are realizing that labour's longtime concerns are their own. That's because incomes and wages have not just been stagnating, but falling in recent years.
"Our agenda is America's agenda," Elizabeth Warren declared in a speech surveying American history. "In every fight to build opportunity in this country, in every fight to level the playing field, in every fight for working families, we have been on the front lines."
A curious crossroad
The AFL-CIO, which is a federation of 57 unions with 13 million members, knows this history and made every effort at its convention to rebrand itself as leader of a new populist movement for all Americans who make their living working for someone else. The meeting hall in L.A. was not another drab conference filled with white, male, middle-aged leaders from across the country. It was filled with women, people of colour and colourful posters extolling labour, and touted non-traditional participants, from successful organizers like the Taxi Workers Alliance to Jobs with Justice.
"There is a determination to make the labour movement broader and more inclusive through many different avenues," said Aruna Jain, spokesperson for Working America, the AFL-CIO's grassroots organizing arm started in 2003 for people in non-union jobs. Working America, which has three million members, recently launched the online tool FixMyJob.com which gives people tips on how to achieve better working conditions and compensation, and is indicative of labour's more inclusive approach.
"Working America is a good idea; it's the model that they are trying to follow," said Getman, who said there's also been talk for many years about "separating unions from collective bargaining" for members. That strategy gets difficult to put in practice, he said, although he praised the effort. "All of these are good things. They're trying to think of ways to be more relevant."
Labour stands at a curious crossroad, as the country seems to be coming closer to its values and agenda, although the political party that had been helped the most by labour -- the Democrats -- are often reluctant to embrace its class warfare populism. Most Democrats are unlike Sen. Warren, who welcomes unions and their social justice legacy as a basis of her agenda. Instead, they are like President Obama, who often talks about rebuilding the middle class but almost never mentions labour -- even though it helped to elect him and other recently imperiled Democrats, such as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
In L.A., speaker after speaker gave speeches that hit the notes progressives hope to hear from Democrats, but frequently don't. Almost all of the resolutions passed were more strident and focused in their criticism of what's wrong with America than the Democratic Party's 2012 platform. Here's the conclusion of a resolution on "Good Jobs, Economic Security and Tax Fairness."
"We are not a poor country. We are, however, a country in which economic inequality has risen to alarming levels; economic elites have grown increasingly indifferent to the well-being of their fellow citizens; multinational corporations have grown increasingly disconnected from the economic interests of the people who actually live and work in America; Wall Street and the wealthiest Americans have gained outsized political influence in our democracy; and economic policy makers have convinced themselves that good jobs and the economic security of working people no longer are necessary to our economic success. These are the things that cry out to be changed."
Defying every 'apostle of greed'
Richard Trumka, who rose from the mine workers to become AFL-CIO president, gave a keynote address that was as poignant as Warren's speech but in a different and even more desperate way. Trumka repeatedly said the labour movement has to reinvent itself to survive because the stakes are higher in 2013 -- and those stakes are growing.
"The working class is not the middle class anymore," Trumka said. "We work harder. We work longer hours. We create more -- more goods, more services, more of everything -- and yet most of us earn less. Less than we earned five years ago. Less than we earned 15 years ago. Barely more than we earned 35 years ago."
He did not shy away from pointing the finger of blame at the wealthiest Americans.
"This is a rich country. So where's all the money going?" the AFL-CIO president asked. "All of the wage increases over all those years -- not some, not the majority, not the vast majority, ALL -- went to the top 10 per cent. Incomes for the rest of us -- 90 per cent of America -- went down. And those who did the best were those who were at the top already: the top one per cent."
The message that AFL-CIO delegates embraced was that the fight for economic fairness, justice, opportunity and security was now America's struggle. Their hope is that people will notice a more defiant, diverse and inclusive movement to revive the middle class. "This is America. It's time we value work -- not wealth, not greed," Trumka said. "Our answer to [Wisconsin Gov.] Scott Walker and Walmart and the Koch brothers and every other apostle of greed who seeks to divide us must not just be no. It must be, hell no! If you work for a living...our movement is your movement."
But the challenge labour faces is inspiring people to believe they have a stake in its organizing -- especially young adults, Getman said. "You need something to inspire young people to believe that the labour movement is their cause.... You can pass all the resolutions you want, but what takes place on the ground is what transforms it."
Right now, the grassroots actions that are drawing Americans' attention are the strikes by fast-food workers. Tellingly, it is not speeches by increasingly influential politicians like Warren or seasoned labour leaders like Trumka that are being noticed, but the compelling words of individual fast-food workers, predominantly women of colour, demanding $15 an hour and paid sick leave to support their families.
Those protests will continue this week in Florida, where workers for America's largest restaurant chain, Darden, which owns brands such as Red Lobster and Capital Grille, is holding its annual shareholder meeting. They will continue in Washington, D.C., where the Democratic mayor vetoed a higher minimum wage for big-box retail store workers. Organizers will push the city council to override that veto.
It continues in blue states like California, where the legislature just raised the state minimum wage to $10 an hour -- the highest in the country -- and where Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown is expected to sign that into law, and where the legislature also passed a new domestic workers bill of rights, guaranteeing overtime pay. It is unclear if Brown will sign or veto it.  [Tyee]

Zac Efron

A bromance is in bloom!
Hollywood heartthrobs Zac Efron, 26, and Robert Pattinson, 28, were spotted hanging out in Tinseltown for a guys' night out Tuesday, E! Online reported.
The dynamic duo kicked off their evening at Pinz Bowling Alley in Studio City, Calif., and ended up at celeb hotspot Bootsy Bellows.
"Zac was seen goofing around and Rob was not even trying, skipping his turn at one point. When they left some of the friends smoked cigarettes, while they all just laughed and talked," an eyewitness told E!
It wasn't exactly a "no girls allowed" gathering, as three ladies were reportedly present in their group.
"Rob and Zac both looked good and happy. Rob showed Zac something on his cellphone and they both started laughing. They were in really good moods."
Tuesday's outing marks the second time the actors bro-ed out this past week, according to E!.
Pattinson was partying with Efron and his new gal pal, Michelle Rodriguez, 36, at Chateau Marmont on Saturday.
The "Neighbors" actor was photographed slipping out of the "Fast and the Furious" actress' home in Los Angeles with an overnight bag in hand the next morning.

Kick (2014) Review

Kick is the new synonym for adrenaline rush in India and soon this will take over the entire world too. Having released in 4000 plus screens in the country and 700 plus screens overseas, Kick is a well knit tale about an adrenaline junkie, Salman Khan aka 'Devil' who does things differently just to get a 'Kick' out of it.
The story of Kick is not applaud worthy as it is a remake of Telugu movie of the same name. The movie will start with Shaina (Jacqueline Fernandez), a psychiatrist meeting her perspective groom, Himanshu (Randeep Hooda) on a train journey in Warsaw. Neither of these characters are interested in an arranged union, but on getting to know each other, the two become very good friends. This is when Shaina decides to reveal secrets about her past, mainly her ex-boyfriend, Devil (Salman Khan). The movie goes into flashback here, and bang comes the entry of the hero. After she shares her story, Himanshu too shares his escapades as a police officer and boasts off on how he has finally met his match, an intelligent thief, again the Devil (Salman Khan).
Both Shaina and Himanshu are unaware of the fact that they are talking about the same person. Salman is not playing the role of a Devil or of a superman, he is just an ordinary guy who does things differently to get a 'Kick' out of it. At this point the story is back on track, that is it now moves in present tense and how the Devil again enters their life, how it changes the whole scenario in the movie and why he turns into a devil form the crux of the movie.

Salman and Jacqueline's roles were essayed by Telugu superstar Ravi Teja and Bollywood's latest entrant, Ileana D'Cruz. This film was a typical Ravi Teja entertainer with enough comedy that kept the audience breaking into laughter every now and then.

Ravi Teja did justice to his carefree character and since he is an expert in portraying such roles repeatedly in films after films, it was quite easy for him to reprise such a role again. Coming to Salman Khan, the man is different, even though the movie is a remake, this being a Salman film, the makers have tried to make the entire film seem and sound different. But trust me it is not!

Yeah, the concept of Devil is new, though the character does do bad things, in the end it's for the good of someone else. There is a deep mystery and it is an uncompromising mission for which Devil is ready to lose his life. Why this devilishness gets imbibed in him cannot to be revealed, to know that you will have to watch the film. This beingSajid Nadiadwala's debut direction, only adds to the curiosity level to watch the film.
We have seen Salman do such roles in Dabangg as well, where by heart he is a good man, but he does do bad things to bad people. Devil is just a modern, revamped version of Robin Hood Pandey. If you remember Salman's dialogue in Dabangg, you'll know what I am talking about (Hum yahan ke Robin Hood hain, Robin Hood Pandey).

Salman Khan has done a lot of south remakes in the past few years and strangely they have clicked for Salman's version has always been bigger and better, his movies actually give us a kick! So this 2014 version of Kick will also be bigger and better than 2009 version. He truly is a star whose power we cannot understand, "Main Dil mein aata hoon, samajh mein nahin". Continue to read Kick movie review in the slide show.

50 Shades of Grey

The first trailer for Fifty Shades of Grey sent the internet into paroxysms this afternoon, with conversation being 5% portrayal of women, 10% Beyonce soundtrack, 15 % "squeeeeee" and 70% Jamie Dornan's torso.

The trailer was quite slickly executed, even if the dialogue was like scraps from the Twilight cutting room floor and the sex was virtually non-existent, and seemed to go down well with hardcore fans of EL James' novels.
"WAHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I'M PANTING!!!" one happy customer wrote, with another tweeting: "Ok fifty shades of grey trailer is perfection. I'm in love all over again with Christian Grey."
Other were unhappy with Dakota Johnson's Anastasia coming across like a lost puppy, with one viewer writing: "Man if 50 Shades of Grey is a movie that spoofs the sad premise that a woman needs a man to give her worth, then this trailer is KILLING IT."
